Car Guide 911

Replacing electrical fuses in your car can seem confusing and even intimidating. However, it doesn't have to be this way. From personal experience, I learned how to replace my electrical fuses by taking my car to an auto part store and having a sales associate show me how to correctly replace a fuse. Here are some things I learned:
  • Make sure everything is turned off in your car before checking fuses.
  • Each fuse has its own particular slot in the fuse box.
  • A burned out fuse will look like the filament in a burned-out lightbulb and it also may be a little black.
  • The usual locations for the fuse box are under the steering wheel, in the engine compartment, or in both places.
The video on the right explains how to locate, check, and replace car electrical fuses. Below are the main points that this video provides.

1. Check the owner's manual for the location of the fuse box.
2. There are three different types of fuses that may be present. They are called glass tube, solid plastic, and blade. The picture in the upper right corner has examples of the "blade" variety.
3. Use tweezers or your fingers to remove the ruined fuse.
4. Always replace the old fuse with an identical new fuse.
5. Insert the new fuse with tweezers or your fingers.
6. Test the new fuse to see if it is working properly.
